Does Palestine want to save the Alamo School? The decision may be made this week.

The November Palestine Building & Standards Commission public meeting is scheduled for 4:00 PM, Thursday, November 19, 2009 at Palestine City Hall, City Council Chambers. Item III (1), 1101 N. Cedar St, on the agenda is regarding the possib...le demolition of the Alamo School, built 1912, and the Palestine Public Library 1986 addition.

All interested Palestine residents should attend the meeting next Thursday to observe and participate in the proceedings and if necessary, speak before the B&SC regarding the item.

Demolition or alteration to a Publicly Owned building that is at least 50 years old must first be reviewed and approved by the Texas Historical Commission. Therefore, should demolition of the building be ordered by the Building and Standards Commission, notice of such demolition must first be reviewed and approved by the Texas Historical Commission prior to any action being taken and the 60 day review period is over on December 23, 2009.

The 2010 Arc Light - A Product of the Past, a Basis for the Future.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"With the publication of THE ANNUAL in 1910, a tradition was begun in Palestine High School. Within the fifty-nine pages of that grey, paper-backed book, the staff displayed through histories, group pictures, jokes, and class notes, the student life of the high school. When the 1911 edition was being planned, the staff decided to name THE ANNUAL. A battle royal was staged with names such as THE SKUNK suggested. The name finally selected was the ARC LIGHT, which has an interesting derivation: arc lights were street lights set blocks apart. Because of the distance between each light, the glow could be seen for a lengthy distance. Thus, the book, representing the brightest years of a person's life, was called the ARC LIGHT."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is an excerpt from the 1960 Arc Light. The entire text history will be available on the Facebook PHSAA Page.
Donations to PHSAA as an Arc Light advertiser are welcome. Put your name and class year, or your business name, in this 100th anniversary edition as a member of PHSAA.

Palestine High School Alumni Association present scholarships to four 2009 Seniors

The membership of PHSAA takes great pride in awarding four 2009 graduating seniors of PHS a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 each. Those receiving the scholarships were: Whitnee Davis, Teri Klauser, Rosalinda Salinas, and Heather Wilbanks.

Whitnee Davis is a member of the National Honor Society, and according to faculty members is a very hard working, dependable student. She plans to pursue a degree in nursing.

Teri Klauser is a member of the National Honor Society and has represented PHS in UIL Prose as well as the One-Act Play. She has contributed to her church and the community through her interest in Champions for Children and Relay for Life.

Rosalinda Salinas is a young lady much respected by her teachers as well as her peers. She has devoted her time and energy to raising school spirit. She has been active in fund raising in her community and her church. This young lady has high educational aspirations.

Heather Wilbanks is a student whose diligence and helpful spirit has been very much appreciated by her teachers. She has been very generous in sharing her time for school and community projects. She has taken on the daunting task of Editor of the 2008-2009 Arc Light.

The mission of the Palestine High School Alumni Association is to support the students, faculty, and administration to further strengthen the educational accomplishments of Palestine Independent School District. This organization is the vehicle that we can use to give back to the school system that benefited us during our own years in PISD.

PHSAA welcomes anyone to become a member that cares to see a positive growth in PISD. There are four types of membership: Alumni, $25; Associates, $25; current PHS students, $10; and Corporate, $100 per year. Anyone can go online and print out an enrollment form on the website.

Upon receipt of your donation, you will receive a window decal from our Treasurer. The decal is maroon and white with the words, "I support PHSAA". It is very attractive and don't forget there are memberships for Alumni and Associates, current PHS Students, and Corporate Membership. The enrollment form is available on the website.

It will soon be time to give our 2009 scholarships to Palestine High School graduates. This will happen at the Awards Assembly. In addition to the scholarships given last year, PHSAA honored an outstanding teacher each month throughout the school year 2008-2009 by presenting them with the "HAT" Award and a check for $100. We feel this has been a very worthwhile project.

Your contribution, small though it may seem, is unique and appreciated. Thanks in advance for renewing your membership. It would really please those of us already in PHSAA to see you join us in recruiting more members.  Numbers will keep us strong. We're doing good things for students and teachers in PISD and want to continue year in and year out from now on. We need you.

Have you been enjoying www.PalestineHigh.com?
We sure hope so. Our webmaster, William Reed has done a marvelous job for PHSAA's website. If you have website talent and would like to help William with the possibility of taking over the website for PHSAA sometime in the future, please let us know. He will continue until he can't see any more which might be soon. We need you.

Merry Christmas to PHS Alumni.

Celebrate the season and a Christmas Concert with the Palestine High School Band and Color Guard at the Civic Center on Friday December 12, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. Alumni band members in attendance will be given recognition.

Looking back at the growth of PHSAA in 10 months is another reason to celebrate:
  • Over 120 members.
  • Almost $10,000 received in donations.
  • Granted $2,000 in scholarships in May.
  • Granted 'Honor A Teacher' awards of $100 each month starting in September.
  • PHSAA was in 6 news stories in the Palestine Herald-Press.
Recognition of the group activities and efforts is growing in the schools and the community. The involvement of individuals working together with a shared goal has given PHSAA a noteworthy first year.

2008 has been a tremendous year for the Alumni website. We should pass the 27,000 visitor count very soon. The counter was started on 2-25-2005. The number of recipients of this newsletter is close to 500.

MISS MARGARET FITZGERALD IS HAVING A 90TH BIRTHDAY!!!

I need to pass all info on to my Aunt Margaret and have printed out some things about PHSAA, and mailed or took them to her.  It pleases her a great deal! She is going to be so surprised on her birthday,  One cousin, who lives in Jacksonville,  has told her they want to come by and take them for hamburgers for her birthday but all 4 of the cousins and spouses are going to be there along with some of our children and will have cards and gifts for her.
And we are not going for hamburgers.  She is going to be so thrilled with all the cards I am getting for her.  I think I have close to 20 now and hope they continue to come in before next Tuesday!!!  I can just see her spending hours reading them over and over.  You know what might be neat?  If after say 3:00 on the afternoon of Nov. 11, when we are all gone home,  any who wanted to phoned her just to say happy birthday!!  I had not thought of that until just now, but that would also give her a thrill!  If you feel like doing so, you might add her phone number on the posting on the web site.
Her number is 729-2592.
(She will "kill" me! _ha!)

The Palestine Public Library will honor former mayor, community leader, author and 1946 PHS grad Jack Selden during a special reception Tuesday. The reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. in the library's large meeting room.

On Friday and Saturday, Main Street businesses in the downtown and Old Town areas are holding a "Deck the Halls" open house to kick off the holiday season with decorations and Christmas music.

Also on Friday November 14th, 2008, PHSAA is having a general  meeting at the Ben E. Keith Community Room starting at 6 p.m. Sure hope to see you there.
Dr. Thomas A. WallisSuperintendent of Schools, will be the featured speaker. You will hear an update on the state of PISD - where it was, where it is, and where it is going.  Also, Shawn Murphy, Band Director - representing the band and teachers and Sarah Bates, Student Council - representing the Student Body.

I feel compelled to write to you about the success of Saturday's PHSAA Meeting at the high school building that first opened in 1916, and remained as an educational facility until 1976. This was my first visit to the interior of this fabulous, historical structure.

The successful tone of the meeting was not due to the number of alumni that attended, or the reports of the number of members and funds received. The feeling that I felt came after hearing directly from the representatives from the high school, and the school district.

The steps that we are taking will be greatly appreciated by the dedicated staff of the school district. The Teacher of the Year's message was exactly what I wanted, and needed to hear about our endeavor.

For those that attended today, I extend my heartfelt thanks. To those that attended in January, and could not make it today, I missed seeing you.

To the Board, I believe that you know that you have undertaken a very important mission, and that the tasks involved may be difficult to achieve. Your success will be shared with entire community. As each month goes by, and the crowd of supporters grows, your "job" becomes more difficult.

You are the leaders. Please quickly determine how this growing, anxious crowd can actively participate in efforts to benefit the schools. I sincerely believe that there are many waiting to hear about an opportunity to help out. Don't be afraid to ask ... again, and again, and again if needed.

Janice Bedre Burris can certify that I am good at this. With her, my effort was doubled, and because of her, the ten-fold result occurred on 10-10-07. At this time, that number has expanded ten-fold in such a short period of time.

The PHSAA Board of Directors is reviewing applications to determine the recipient of the first PHSAA Scholarship. A Board meeting is planned for Tuesday, April 22.

Your membership in the association, and additional donations provide the funds for the scholarships. The Membership/Scholarship form is available on the website. I encourage you to join in on this growing effort to benefit the youth of Palestine. The membership numbers will soon reach 100, and funds received will exceed $4,000.

The next general meeting of the Association is set for Saturday, May 17, 1:00 p.m. at the Museum For East Texas Culture. I sure hope to meet many more of you that have shared stories and documentation of your time spent in school in Palestine. Some of you probably attended school in the Museum building.

While this message is going out to hundreds of PHS Alumni, there are many more that are not part of this email list. Some in Palestine do not like to use email. I have a plan to try to contact by telephone those without email. If you live in the Palestine area code, and would like to participate, please send me a message.

Become a part of this growing endeavor, and share the rewards that are felt by those already participating.

The PHSAA  Newsletter is difficult to manage. This message contains recommendations that may or may not be endorsed by the PHSAA Board of Directors.

Your email address is an important way for your classmates to keep in touch with you. It may be the only means of contact for some of you. A stable reliable and long-lasting email is critical.

Your ISP email (Internet Service Provider) is not necessarily a long-term choice. ISP's change almost as frequently as the weather.

Your employer email is subject to change for many reasons. Job change, employer name change, or going out of business and you are looking for a new email address.

I urge you get an alternative email from Google. For a free email account that can be read in your favorite email program or online, Gmail is the best choice.

To look at Gmail, go here - http://mail.google.com/mail/help/intl/en/about.html
or here -

after enabling POP3 access -

I will be glad to help you any way that I can.

I am also working on a project to offer email to you as part of PHSAA. A package of communication services, powered by Google, is on the way. This will especially be of interest to Class Contacts responsible for maintaining the whereabouts of your classmates.

Class Contacts, let me hear from you. In fact, we need to gather a list of Class Contacts. Let me know who you Class Contact is.

If you change your email address, please use the link on the Home page to subscribe to the Newsletter.

Palestine High School Alumni Association
to Award Scholarship to Graduating Senior

2008 will be the first year that a senior of Palestine High School will receive a PHSAA Scholarship.  We are calling for alumni, former students, and friends of Palestine High School to get on board in sponsoring this scholarship.  There are many outstanding students in this year's graduating class of PHS who truly deserve and will need our support as they try to continue their education.  This is the very first project to be undertaken by the newly-formed alumni association.

The scholarship applications have been delivered to the high school counselor and are being completed by the applicants right now.  The deadline for applications to be turned in will be Friday April 11, 2008.  The Board of Directors will make the selection and the name of the scholarship recipient will be announced on the website shortly following the award assembly at the high school in the middle of May.

We need the alumni of PHS to make this scholarship possible.  Many of you, no doubt, remember when you or even your own children began applying for scholarships, and how important and appreciated each one was.  If every alumnus comes on board with even a small donation, we will reach our goal of $1,000.00 for the scholarship this year.  If you choose to make your donation in memory of a loved one or former classmate, as many are doing, please provide that information as well, so a board member can notify the family that you have made such a donation.   You can be sure that your donation will go directly to the educational expenses of a very deserving student from your alma mater.

The Membership/Donation Form is on the website.

Please think this over and send your scholarship donation to:

Dear Prospective Members of PHSAA,

Over the past few years, it has been found that there is a profound need for classmates from Palestine High School to meet and stay in touch with each other and our Alma Matter. Waiting to see classmates for the scheduled class reunions has not been enough for some. Go online to PalestineHigh.com and enjoy not only classmates of yours but other classes as well. Your contributions to this web site will be greatly appreciated. This is just one of our many goals to be carried out through PHSAA.

We hope to bring to the front lines some of the wonderful PHS history. The catalyst of PHS graduates in the past has been pride, respect, responsibility, enthusiasm, following our dreams and contributing to society to make it a better place for those that come after us. Our families, schools, churches, neighbors and organizations instilled these things in us. In whole, our community did this. The time has come now for us to give back to our Alma Matter. It is our duty to share our experiences with the present generation at PHS.  What better vehicle can we do this than through PHSAA, a non-profit organization.

Please join us in setting the stage for exciting and spectacular events to tell our story. Your membership can provide the funds necessary to bring into the school the much-needed motivational speakers, student scholarships, teacher scholarships and other creative contributions and ideas to let PHS know we care and are here for their support. They need us.

We admit “times are different” but one thing is not different and that is that each living being needs to be loved.  PHSAA can become a loving family for so many that desperately needs a caring individual.

It is our responsibility to tell our story; to bring to the forefront just what can be accomplished through pride and respect. Group effort of all those who care for PISD are invited to join PHSAA. You do not have to be a graduate of PHS, just a person who cares to share creative thoughts, time, love, and donations; anything that would benefit PISD. All schools in America today need the very things we are talking about here to be successful. Some are already doing this and their school districts are thriving because of the community effort.

Do you realize what 10,000 members in PHSAA could do for PISD?  The funds from yearly memberships of $25.00 (Alumni & Associates), $10.00 (current students of PHS), or $100.00 (Corporate) could help provide our very own school district the things needed to help keep these ideals alive and demonstrate what pride, respect, enthusiasm, responsibility and caring can do for them.

Our next meeting will be May 17, 2008 in the Museum for East Texas Culture, 400 Micheaux Ave. in Palestine.  Won’t you join us?  Membership forms can be downloaded from the web site. and mailed to us.  We are hoping to hear back from every past graduate of PHS and from all those who have an interest in seeing that blessings are bestowed on PISD.   If you can provide current addresses, email addresses, etc. of alumni, PLEASE DO.  You can do this through the website.

Loyally,

PHSAA Board Members

Hello PHS Alumni

It is now two weeks away from the inaugural meeting of PHSAA on January 22, 2008.

The meeting will be held at Palestine High School, starting at 6 PM.

To help us get an idea of how many will be in attendance, we are asking for your informal RSVP. There are two ways to reach the RSVP Survey site.
  1. Go to the alumni website at www.PalestineHigh.com and you will see the link near the top of the page. This will take you to the Bravenet sponsored survey form.
  2. You can go directly to the survey form from this link - http://pub18.bravenet.com/vote/vote.php?usernum=1495589601&cpv=2
On a personal note, I will be in attendance at the meeting, and look forward to meeting each of you. For many of you that have been communicating with me as far back as 2000 when this project began, this opportunity will provide me with a 'cherished moment' in my life.

Thanking You in advance for Your Support of the Palestine High School Alumni Association.

Wishing a Merry Christmas to PHS Alumni.
  • 2007 has been a momentous year for the Alumni website. We passed the 20,000 visitor count in November. The counter was started on 2-25-05.
  • The website URL (address) has been moved to www.PalestineHigh.com instead of txua.com. Hopefully, no serious problems for you were caused as a result of this move.
  • PHSAA is underway. The Alumni Association formation meeting was conducted in October. The inaugural meeting of PHSAA is now being planned. The date is January 22, 2008.

2008 brings a promise of additional developments for the website and for tools to assist in the expansion of PHSAA.
